How this works (the honest bit).
Marriage is sourced rather than guessed: the United Nations puts the crude marriage rate at roughly 5.5 marriages per 1,000 people per year worldwide, though it is falling almost everywhere and varies widely between countries. A ceremony runs about an hour, and each wedding involves two people, so about 120,000 weddings - a quarter of a million people - get married on a typical day, and roughly ten thousand are somewhere inside their ceremony at this moment. The figure is small, and it is meant to be. Marriage is one of the few things on this network that happens once in a life rather than many times in a day. Every figure on this page is a model built from population data, each country's local clock and the assumptions above. It is an estimate, it moves every second, and at least one of them is certainly true.
